Late October brings Halloween parties, trick-or-treat trails, themed brunches and haunted attractions across the UAE. If you’re hosting one, you’ve probably thought about fog. A low, rolling mist is one of the quickest ways to make a room feel spooky, and dry ice is the classic way to create it.
This guide explains how dry ice effects work, how to use them safely at home, and why liquid nitrogen is a different matter altogether.
Why dry ice works for Halloween
Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide at about -78.5°C. It doesn’t melt into water. It turns straight into gas, which is called sublimation. When you drop it into warm water, it releases thick white fog that hangs low and spreads across surfaces, which is why it looks so eerie.
Warmer water makes denser fog but uses the dry ice up faster. Cooler water gives a gentler, longer-lasting effect.
Four easy dry ice effects
1. The cauldron. Put warm water in a heat-safe container or a cauldron prop and add small pieces of dry ice. The fog spills over the edge and across the table. This is the simplest and most popular effect.
2. Low-lying fog on the floor. Place a container of warm water with dry ice on the floor, away from walkways. The fog stays low and drifts, which works well at entrances, photo spots and haunted corridors.
3. Fog pumpkins and centrepieces. Hide a bowl of warm water inside a carved pumpkin or prop and add dry ice. Keep the dry ice in a separate bowl that guests cannot reach.
4. Smoking drinks, done carefully. Dry ice can make a drink look dramatic, but it must never be swallowed. A safer method is to keep the dry ice in an outer bowl and place the drink in a smaller bowl inside it, so the fog surrounds the drink without touching it. If you serve drinks with dry ice in the glass, wait until every piece has completely disappeared before anyone drinks. For bars and venues, see our swizzle sticks for dry ice.
Safety rules you should not skip
Dry ice is safe when handled properly, but it can injure you if it is not.
- Never touch it with bare hands. It can cause cold burns in seconds. Use cryogenic gloves or insulated tongs, or a handling shovel.
- Never swallow it or put it in anyone’s mouth. Children should be supervised at all times, and young children should not handle it.
- Never seal dry ice in a closed container. The gas builds pressure. Store it in an insulated container that is not airtight, such as our insulated dry ice containers.
- Keep the room ventilated. Dry ice releases carbon dioxide, which can displace the air you breathe in small or closed spaces. Don’t use large amounts in a small room, a car or a lift.
- Keep it out of guests’ reach, and don’t leave it where people could trip over or touch the container.
- Test before the party. Start with a small amount and see how much fog you get. You can always add more.
- Dispose of leftovers safely. Leave them in a ventilated place to sublimate. Don’t put dry ice in a sink, a toilet or a sealed bin.
How much dry ice do you need?
It depends on the size of your space, how long the party runs and how thick you want the fog. Fog from a container fades as the dry ice runs out, so you will need to top it up through the evening.
Tell us the type of event, the venue size and how long you need the effect, and we’ll recommend a quantity. Pellets are easy to portion for fog effects, and blocks last longer if you need to store dry ice before the party. See our guide to dry ice pellet and block sizes.
Dry ice for bars, cafés and venues
If you run a bar, café, venue or hotel in Dubai, the same principles apply on a bigger scale, plus a few more:
- Brief your staff on handling and ventilation before the event.
- Use proper containers, gloves and tools, not improvised ones.
- Have a plan for restocking so staff aren’t carrying dry ice through crowds.
- Ask your venue manager about local requirements for effects and food service.

What about liquid nitrogen?
You may see liquid nitrogen used for dramatic fog and smoking drinks at events. It is much colder than dry ice, about -196°C, and it is a different product with different risks. It is not a party product for home use.
- It can cause severe cold burns on contact.
- It expands into a very large volume of gas, which can reduce oxygen in enclosed spaces.
- It needs a proper container and trained handlers.
- Anything served to guests must be handled with extreme care, and nothing should be served while any liquid nitrogen remains.
If your business or laboratory has trained staff and a genuine need for liquid nitrogen, you can enquire about liquid nitrogen supply in Dubai and across the UAE, including storage tanks. For a Halloween party at home, stick to dry ice.
Planning your order
For the best results:
- Order ahead. Seasonal weekends are busy, so contact us early for your date.
- Tell us what you need. Share the date, location, type of event and the effect you want.
- Prepare your equipment. Have an insulated container, gloves and heat-safe containers ready.
- Collect or arrange delivery close to the event, because dry ice sublimates over time even in a good container. Ask us what delivery options are available for your area.
After Halloween
The same effects work for National Day celebrations, New Year’s Eve parties, weddings, product launches and photo shoots. Keep this guide handy for your next event.
Frequently asked questions
Q. Is dry ice safe for a Halloween party?
Yes, if you handle it correctly: gloves, ventilation, no swallowing and no sealed containers. Keep it away from young children.
Q. Can I put dry ice in drinks?
Only if you make sure it has completely disappeared before anyone drinks. A safer method is to keep it in an outer bowl around the drink.
Q. How long does dry ice fog last?
Each batch lasts for a limited time, depending on water temperature, the amount of dry ice and the container. You will need to top it up during the party.
Q. Can children touch dry ice?
No. Never let children handle it, and supervise closely at all times.
Q. Can I use dry ice in a car or small room?
Avoid it. Carbon dioxide can build up in small, closed spaces. Keep spaces ventilated and don’t carry dry ice in a sealed cabin.
Q. Can I use liquid nitrogen at home for Halloween effects?
No. Liquid nitrogen needs proper containers and trained handlers. It is not a party product for home use.
Q. What size dry ice is best for fog?
Small pellets or small pieces are easy to portion. We can recommend a size and quantity for your event.
Q. Does IceJet supply dry ice for events in Dubai?
Yes. Contact us with your date, location and quantity.
